Pakistan- Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza, who himself was imprisoned in a blasphemy case, has exposed the widespread misuse of Pakistan’s blasphemy laws. Speaking with journalist Shahzeb Khanzada, he revealed that under public pressure, death sentences are sometimes issued in false cases, raising serious questions about the justice system.

One tragic example is Pastor Zafar Bhatti, a Christian preacher, who was falsely accused after returning from the United States following the assassination of Shahbaz Bhatti Shaheed. He spent 13 years in prison, endured a death sentence that was later overturned, and was finally released in October 2025. But heartbreakingly, just two days after his release, he passed away due to health complications caused by prolonged suffering in jail.
LEAD Ministries has condemned this case, stating that blasphemy laws are often abused to persecute Christians and other religious minorities in Pakistan, and they have called on international Christian leadership to pray and speak out.
A law that punishes people not for their actions but for their beliefs or words cannot coexist with genuine religious freedom. Misuse of blasphemy laws directly attacks the right to worship, speak, and live according to one’s faith. Cases like Zafar Bhatti’s are a tragic reminder of this.
Thirteen years in prison, a false case, a death sentence later overturned, and death immediately after release—this is not just one person’s story, but a reflection of a broken system. When justice is delayed for years, the cost is human lives, destroyed families, and silent graves.
We need a justice system where innocent people are not imprisoned for years and where false accusations do not destroy lives.
