Sardar Mushtaq Gill Condemns Extremist Attack on Christians at Funeral in Jordan, Calls for Global Action Against Christian Persecution

Human Rights Defender Warns That Religious Extremism and Terrorist Ideologies Continue to Threaten Christian Communities in Muslim-Majority Countries

JORDAN — Sardar Mushtaq Gill, a human rights defender, lawyer and founder of LEAD Ministries, has strongly condemned the reported extremist attack on Christians attending a funeral in Jordan. He has called for justice for the victims and urgent international action to combat religious persecution, violent extremism and terrorism targeting vulnerable Christian communities.

At least seven people were killed and more than 40 others seriously injured when armed militants opened fire during a funeral service at a Greek Orthodox church in Hamoud, Karak, about 120 kilometres south of Jordan’s capital, Amman. The shooting triggered panic as gunfire continued for several minutes, and the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, with several in critical condition. King Abdullah II condemned the attack as a terrorist act and vowed the harshest punishment for those responsible, while security forces launched a large-scale search operation to track down the fleeing attackers.

The reported incident has renewed concerns about the safety of Christians in parts of the Middle East and other Muslim-majority countries, where religious intolerance, extremist ideologies and discrimination continue to threaten the rights and security of religious minorities.

A funeral should be a place of mourning, prayer and consolation, not a target for violence. Attacking people because of their religious identity is a grave violation of human dignity, religious freedom and the fundamental right to life.

Religious Extremism and the Targeting of Christians

In several countries, violent Islamist extremist organisations have used radical interpretations of religion to justify hostility towards Christians and other religious minorities. Such ideologies can promote hatred, encourage violence and portray people of different faiths as enemies.

Terrorist organisations have targeted Christian communities through bombings, shootings, kidnappings and forced displacement. These attacks have destroyed families, damaged places of worship and forced innocent people to flee their homes.

In Pakistan, Christian communities have faced mob violence following blasphemy allegations, including attacks that have damaged churches and Christian homes. In parts of Africa and the Middle East, jihadist extremist groups have also committed atrocities against Christians and other civilian populations.

These acts of violence demonstrate the serious danger posed when extremist ideologies are used to legitimise religious hatred and the deliberate targeting of innocent people. Such crimes must be condemned unequivocally, and those responsible must be held accountable under the law.

Christian Persecution Requires International Attention

The persecution of Christians is a serious human rights concern that demands sustained international attention. In some countries, Christians face discrimination, intimidation, restrictions on religious expression and inadequate protection against violence.

Blasphemy accusations can expose individuals and entire communities to serious risks, particularly when allegations trigger mob attacks or are exploited to settle personal disputes. Where authorities fail to protect victims or prosecute perpetrators, a climate of fear and impunity can develop.

Religious freedom must be protected not merely in principle but in practice. Christians should be able to attend church, celebrate religious festivals, bury their loved ones and raise their families without fear of persecution.

Governments have a responsibility to protect all citizens equally, regardless of their religious beliefs, and to ensure that those who incite or commit violence face justice.

Jordan Attack Highlights the Need for Accountability

The reported attack on Christians attending a funeral in Jordan underscores the urgent need for a thorough and impartial investigation. Authorities must establish the circumstances of the incident, identify those responsible and determine whether religious extremism or a terrorist motive played a role.

Protecting religious gatherings and places of worship must be a priority wherever credible threats exist. Victims and their families deserve justice, while affected communities need assurances that they can practise their faith without fear.

The international community should support efforts to prevent religiously motivated violence, strengthen protections for vulnerable minorities and challenge extremist propaganda that encourages hatred against people of different faiths.

Sardar Mushtaq Gill Calls for Action Against Religious Persecution

As a human rights defender, lawyer and founder of LEAD Ministries, Sardar Mushtaq Gill's condemnation highlights the importance of defending religious freedom and standing with communities facing persecution.

The international community must not overlook attacks against Christians or allow religiously motivated violence to become normalised. Governments, human rights organisations and international institutions should press for impartial investigations, accountability for perpetrators, protection for threatened communities and equal legal rights for religious minorities.

Education, public awareness and effective law enforcement are also essential to counter ideologies that promote religious hatred and justify terrorism.

Defending Christians Is Defending Human Rights

The reported attack in Jordan is a reminder of the urgent need to confront religious persecution and protect innocent people from extremist violence. Wherever Christians are targeted because of their faith, their suffering deserves recognition, their rights demand protection and those responsible must face justice.

Extremist ideologies that justify terrorism, discrimination and attacks on religious minorities must be challenged openly and consistently. No religious belief should be used as an excuse to murder innocent people or deny them their fundamental freedoms.

Every Christian has the right to worship freely, mourn loved ones in peace and live without fear of persecution. Defending these rights is not a demand for special treatment; it is a call for justice, equality, religious freedom and human dignity.

Sardar Mushtaq Gill's condemnation serves as a call for the international community to stand firmly against religiously motivated violence and work towards a world where people of every faith can live together in peace and security.
